Former Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov has expressed that the commitment of the UK and France to deploy troops in Ukraine has had a significant impact, leaving Vladimir Putin uncertain about his next steps.
Kasyanov noted that the formation of a coalition of willing nations has put the Russian leader in a dilemma. This development followed statements by UK’s Keir Starmer regarding the establishment of military bases in Ukraine by the UK and France in the event of a peace agreement.
During an interview with Times Radio, Kasyanov emphasized that Putin will need to adjust his strategy in response to recent events. He highlighted that the coalition’s actions in Paris have shifted the dynamics and separated the issue of security guarantees for Ukraine from other matters, indicating a significant shift in approach.
The former Prime Minister remarked that the transatlantic unity displayed in the recent agreements, with the backing of the US, has put pressure on Putin and left him with uncertainty on how to proceed.
Notably, the UK has agreed to construct secure facilities for weapons and military equipment to aid Ukraine in its defense efforts. The joint declaration signed by the UK Prime Minister, French President, and Ukrainian leader in Paris allows for the deployment of British and French troops post-ceasefire.
In response to Starmer’s proposal, a close ally of Putin, Dmitry Rogozin, criticized the plan, warning of potential missile strikes on UK troops in Ukraine. Rogozin disparaged Starmer, labeling him as ignorant and imprudent.
Furthermore, US envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed Trump’s support for security guarantees and readiness to deter Russian aggression in Ukraine. The proposed blueprint outlines a multinational force led by European nations, with potential involvement from non-European countries, including the US.
The declaration also includes plans for US-led ceasefire monitoring, long-term backing for the Ukrainian military, and support for Ukraine in case of future Russian hostilities.
Reflecting on the recent developments, Starmer highlighted the significance of European and American unity in supporting peace efforts in Ukraine and expressed optimism about progress towards peace, acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead.
