U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade representative has emphasized that the U.S. will not tolerate any retaliatory measures from Canada in response to the latest tariff threat. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that the administration’s focus is on safeguarding domestic supply chains rather than engaging in a trade war, noting that any country retaliating against the U.S. will face consequences.
Trade discussions between Canada and the U.S. have intensified following Trump’s warning of imposing a substantial 50% tariff on numerous Canadian products effective from August 19. Greer, after several meetings with Canada’s Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc, described the negotiations as positive, indicating a willingness from the Canadian side for a more conciliatory approach.
Industry insiders familiar with the trade talks have highlighted that Canada views the looming August 19 deadline as critical, suggesting that if tariffs are implemented, further negotiations may be jeopardized. Greer reiterated the U.S.’s commitment to prioritizing President Trump’s trade policy while expressing openness to aligning with Canada if it serves America’s interests.
Recent developments suggest that both countries are exploring potential solutions to address existing tariffs on key sectors such as automotive and steel. While the U.S. presented a new proposal to reduce some sectoral tariffs, it falls short of Canada’s expectations for a comprehensive agreement.
