US President Donald Trump has revealed plans to advance the Israel-Palestine peace initiative by launching a “Board of Peace for Gaza.” This board, a crucial aspect of Trump’s 20-point peace proposal, will be responsible for overseeing a “technocratic government” in Gaza following the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas last October. Trump himself will lead the board, ensuring the management of an interim administration during the reconstruction phase post-ceasefire.
Additionally, Trump has stated that US representatives will work towards a comprehensive demilitarization agreement with Hamas, aiming to secure a permanent disarmament commitment from the organization.
The Board of Peace is expected to consist of around 10-15 leaders from various nations, including Arab and Western countries. Former UN Middle East envoy Nickolay Mladenov will serve as a key representative in Gaza. Trump emphasized the progress made in delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza post-ceasefire, setting the stage for the current phase focused on governance under the Board’s guidance.
Trump highlighted the commitment of Palestinian leaders to a peaceful future, with support from Egypt, Turkey, and Qatar in achieving a complete demilitarization agreement with Hamas. Emphasizing the urgency for Hamas to fulfill its obligations, Trump underlined the importance of swift action for lasting peace in Gaza.
The announcement of the Board of Peace’s formation follows a confirmation from Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, regarding the implementation of the second phase of the peace plan. Notably, the situation involving the remaining hostage in Gaza has impacted progress, with Israel’s stance on fulfilling commitments from the initial ceasefire stage standing firm.
