Thousands of households in the UK are set to benefit from a £150 credit provided by their energy supplier during this month. Utilita has already begun distributing the Warm Home Discount cash to smart prepay customers, with the aim of completing all payments by the month’s end.
The Warm Home Discount, valued at £150, will be directly credited to the electricity accounts of eligible households, rather than being issued as a cash payment to their bank. To qualify for this benefit, households must have been receiving specific benefits on the qualifying date, which varies annually.
Residents in England and Wales will automatically receive the Warm Home Discount, while individuals in Scotland are eligible for automatic payment only if they receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit. For other qualifying benefits, manual application through the energy supplier is necessary, as the Warm Home Discount scheme is not available in Northern Ireland.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has announced the removal of the high energy use criteria for the Warm Home Discount in England and Wales. Previously, applicants had to demonstrate high energy costs to qualify for benefits other than Pension Credit, but this requirement has now been eliminated.
DESNZ estimates that the number of households benefiting from the discount could increase by 2.7 million, reaching an estimated total of 6.1 million households. Meanwhile, energy bills have recently risen, with the Ofgem price cap for a typical dual fuel household paying by direct debit increasing to £1,758.
It is important to note that the Ofgem price cap sets limits on the charges for gas and electricity units, as well as fixed daily standing charges for connection to the energy network. While the price cap provides an indication of annual costs for typical energy consumption, actual bills are based on individual energy usage.
