World Password Day, observed on Thursday, May 7, serves as a timely reminder for individuals to review and strengthen their account security measures. It is common for people to fall into the trap of using easily crackable passwords across various online platforms, leaving them susceptible to cyber threats.
Research conducted by Hybrid Cloud Services revealed alarming statistics, indicating that one out of eight individuals uses the same password for all their accounts, a risky practice. Additionally, around 36% of users resort to using only one to three passwords for all their online activities. Conversely, a mere 19% of people adopt the safer practice of employing a unique password for each account they access.
Despite repeated warnings from cybersecurity experts, simplistic passwords like “admin,” “123456,” and “password” continue to rank among the most widely used in the UK. To enhance security, individuals are advised to avoid such common passwords and opt for more complex alternatives. Implementing two-factor authentication, creating intricate passwords, and utilizing password managers are recommended strategies to safeguard personal information effectively.
Matt Cooke, EMEA Cybersecurity Strategist at Proofpoint, emphasized the importance of avoiding password reuse and encouraged the adoption of stringent security measures. He advised against using easily guessable passwords, endorsing the use of multi-factor authentication and password managers to fortify account protection. Cooke recommended regular password updates, suggesting biannual changes for personal accounts and quarterly updates for business-related passwords.
To enhance password security, individuals can follow these three simple practices:
1. Use passphrases instead of simple passwords: Formulate lengthy passphrases by combining unrelated words to create stronger yet memorable passwords.
2. Generate unique passwords for each account: Employ password generators or managers to produce robust, random passwords for individual accounts.
3. Utilize a password manager: Securely store login credentials, automate login inputs, and maintain a repository of strong, distinct passwords for enhanced security across all accounts.
