Acting as a mediator, the Prime Minister aimed to persuade the US President to pursue diplomatic channels rather than resorting to force in acquiring the Danish-controlled region.
Following an initial conversation with President Trump on Wednesday evening, Starmer engaged with Mette Frederiksen, the Danish Prime Minister, to reinforce his stance on Greenland. Both leaders concurred on the importance of NATO intensifying its presence to deter Russian aggression in the region.
Subsequently, Starmer communicated along similar lines with Mark Rutte, NATO’s Secretary General, before reconnecting with Trump later in the day. A Downing Street spokesperson indicated that the discussions revolved around Euro-Atlantic security, with a mutual agreement on the necessity to counter an increasingly assertive Russia in the High North. The Prime Minister emphasized the need for enhanced efforts by European Allies to safeguard Euro-Atlantic interests, particularly in that area.
Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy was scheduled to meet with US Vice President JD Vance, with discussions likely to encompass Greenland and Venezuela. Lammy’s visit to the United States coincided with an event commemorating America’s 250th Anniversary of independence from Britain.
French President Emmanuel Macron cautioned against the US, under Trump, deviating from international norms and distancing itself from certain allies. However, UK minister Pat McFadden reaffirmed the US as a dependable partner despite the behavior exhibited by President Trump.
Downing Street reiterated Starmer’s stance that the future of Greenland should be determined solely by Greenland and Denmark, underscoring this position during the call with Trump.
