More than 100 vehicles were involved in a massive traffic accident triggered by heavy snowfall, leading to chaos for drivers in the United States. The incident occurred in Michigan on Monday, January 19, when a heavy snowfall covered the state, causing cars to skid off the road.
The extensive collision forced the closure of Interstate 196 by Michigan State Police, just southwest of Grand Rapids. A removal operation involving over 30 trucks was initiated, with several injuries reported but thankfully no fatalities. Driver Pedro Mata Jr. described the challenging conditions, noting that the blowing snow made it difficult to see the cars in front before the collision occurred.
Despite managing to stop his pickup truck safely, Mata decided to move it to the median to avoid being rear-ended. Weather warnings have been issued nationwide due to a winter storm causing disruptions, with storms expected in various states from northern Minnesota down to Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.
Forecasters predicted below-zero temperatures overnight in much of north-central Florida and southeast Georgia. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s office in Michigan received numerous reports of accidents and vehicles sliding off the road, leaving drivers stranded. Bus services were arranged to transport them to Hudsonville High School for assistance, while cleanup efforts are expected to keep the road closed for several hours.
Multiple towing companies, including Grand Valley Towing, dispatched more than a dozen trucks to help clear the aftermath of the multi-vehicle crash. The manager of Grand Valley emphasized the urgency of clearing the vehicles quickly to reopen the road for traffic.
