Slovakian fugitive nabbed at Winter Olympics, ends 16-year evasion

Date:

A man from Slovakia, who had been on the run from Italian authorities for 16 years, was apprehended upon his return to his homeland to support the Winter Olympics. The individual, aged 44 and not publicly identified, was intercepted by police before reaching the arena. A warrant for his arrest had been issued in 2010 in connection to multiple theft incidents he allegedly committed, resulting in an 11-month, seven-day prison sentence.

Authorities located the fugitive after he checked into a guesthouse near Milan, despite his wanted status. The man’s intention was to attend an ice hockey event at the Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena, but he was swiftly arrested and taken to San Vittore Prison. Meanwhile, Slovakia’s men’s ice hockey team achieved a remarkable victory over Finland, setting a positive tone for their Olympic campaign.

The Winter Games at Milano Cortina 2026 have been eventful, with notable incidents such as Lindsey Vonn’s leg injury and Jutta Leerdam’s gold medal win in speed skating. Team GB is still awaiting their first medal, with high hopes resting on athletes like Matt Weston in the upcoming skeleton event.

Fans can catch over 850 hours of live action on discovery+ via Prime Video during the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, with the £3.99 entertainment subscription providing access to continuous Olympic coverage on TNT Sports 2.
