Shaun Murphy Slams Matchroom Over Champion of Champions Scheduling

Date:

Shaun Murphy expressed strong dissatisfaction towards Matchroom regarding the scheduling of the Champion of Champions event on Monday. This frustration stemmed from his recent participation in China’s International Championship quarter-finals just four days prior.

Having been unexpectedly placed in the opening match of the tournament, Murphy faced a disappointing 4-1 loss to Lei Peifan. The seasoned player, aged 43, voiced his shock at discovering his Monday fixture while returning from Nanjing, only becoming aware of the event’s schedule on the morning of the match.

Following his defeat, Murphy openly criticized Matchroom for the group allocations, emphasizing his disappointment in the lack of communication and perceived unfair treatment. He highlighted the inconvenience of learning about his match midway through an arduous journey from China, contrasting this with other players who were not in China last week.

In response to Murphy’s outburst, Matchroom issued a statement acknowledging his grievances and emphasizing their commitment to prioritizing player satisfaction. They clarified that groupings were based on seeding for transparency and fairness, recognizing the challenges in scheduling and pledging to enhance future planning.

The controversy surrounding Murphy’s swift inclusion contrasts with other players, including Mark Williams, Mark Allen, and Alfie Burden, who are scheduled to compete in the Champion of Champions later in the week after not participating in the previous International Championship.

On the opening day of the event, top-ranked player Judd Trump secured a 4-1 victory against Bai Yulu, setting up a match against Lei later in the evening. The upcoming matches include Kyren Wilson vs Jack Lisowski, Allen vs Ziao Xintong, Williams vs Burden, Selby vs Maguire, Robertson vs Ford, and Higgins vs Xiao Guodong.

This development unfolds as the snooker community awaits further action in the ongoing Champion of Champions tournament, with players gearing up for intense competition in the days ahead.
