On a chilly and damp winter’s day, stepping into a cozy country pub can be a truly inviting experience. The allure of this charming pub in a quaint Vale of Glamorgan village captivated me for several reasons. Firstly, its stellar reputation for delectable food drew me in. Secondly, having passed by it numerous times while cycling, I often felt tempted to abandon my bike and pop in for a pint.
However, the most compelling reason for my visit was that this establishment is owned by a renowned sports figure. Two decades ago, I witnessed Gavin Henson’s pivotal kick that secured a historic victory for Wales in a rugby match against England. Despite not being the first-choice kicker that day, Henson’s remarkable 44-meter kick from a challenging angle turned the tide in Wales’ favor, marking a significant moment in Welsh rugby history.
Henson, known for his distinctive appearance and athletic prowess, rose to fame alongside singer Charlotte Church, earning the moniker of the “Welsh Posh and Becks.” Beyond his celebrity status, Henson’s talent and dedication to his sport set him apart. Despite his penchant for standing out, he now prefers a low-key life in the tranquil village of St Brides Major, just a stone’s throw from his roots.
In 2019, Henson and his wife took over The Fox, infusing new life into the establishment with a refurbishment that garnered praise for its food and hospitality. However, the pub faced challenges in finding a new head chef amidst the hospitality crisis exacerbated by the pandemic and Brexit uncertainties.
Today, The Fox exudes a timeless charm, blending homeliness with style through its decor of flagstone flooring, muted walls, wooden furnishings, and tasteful Christmas adornments. Settling into a cozy corner table, we savored Butty Bach ale and Jeremy Clarkson’s Hawkstone lager while perusing the menu. The modest Sunday menu offered a selection of starters and main courses, including crispy ham hock, cod, and salmon fishcake, as well as roast sirloin of Welsh beef and shoulder of Welsh lamb, all served with an array of delectable sides.
Our meal, accompanied by beverages and kids’ meals, came to a reasonable total. The warm ambiance and delectable fare left a lasting impression, echoed by fellow diners expressing their intent to return. My experience at The Fox was truly delightful, with the only regret being the missed opportunity to spot one of my sporting idols.
