A search operation is currently underway in challenging conditions to locate a group of individuals in distress at Withernsea.
The Coastguard, alongside the RNLI, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, and Humberside Police, is actively involved in the search effort. The alert was raised around 3:10 pm on January 2, reporting individuals struggling in the waters at Withernsea.
Various rescue teams, including a search and rescue helicopter, fixed-wing aircraft, and three Coastguard teams from Withernsea, Hull, and Hornsea, have been deployed. Additionally, Humberside Fire and Rescue, RNLI lifeboats from Withernsea and Bridlington, and Hornsea Inshore Rescue are providing assistance.
Despite facing adverse conditions with three-meter waves hindering lifeboat deployment, rescue teams are persevering. Yorkshire Ambulance Service, air ambulance, and tactical commanders are also present on the scene, along with Humberside Fire and Rescue.
The area where the search is ongoing is under yellow snow and ice warnings, extending from Norwich to Newcastle along the east coast. The Met Office forecasts snow showers spreading inland, potentially accumulating 1-3 cm of snow widely, with up to 5-8 cm in certain areas, notably the North York Moors.
The inclement weather conditions are part of a larger weather pattern affecting the country, with snow and ice predicted across various regions. Amber snow warnings are issued for northern Scotland, with around 2cm of snowfall expected in some locations, particularly on elevated terrain.
