The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has activated Cold Weather Payments in almost 250 postcode regions in England and Wales today. This action coincides with the Met Office issuing numerous winter weather alerts for the upcoming week. Eligible households, numbering over 500,000, will receive £25 to assist with heating expenses.
The payments have been initiated in 246 postcode areas, including regions like Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire, and parts of Wales and Northern Ireland. Approximately 532,000 households, with a significant portion in Greater Manchester, are expected to benefit from today’s payments, totaling £13.3 million in taxpayer expenditure.
In England and Wales, Cold Weather Payments are triggered when average temperatures are forecasted to fall below zero for seven consecutive days. As the New Year approaches, meteorologists are predicting subzero temperatures in various areas. The scheme targets around 3.9 million individuals eligible for Cold Weather Payments under the DWP, with 1.2 million receiving Pensions Credit.
Recipients of benefits such as Pension Credit, Income Support, Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance, Universal Credit, and Support for Mortgage Interest may qualify for Cold Weather Payments. The payments, amounting to £25, are directly deposited into recipients’ bank accounts within 14 working days. Specific eligibility criteria can be found on the GOV.UK website.
