“Nigel Farage Cleared of Election Spending Breach”

Date:

Nigel Farage will not face an investigation by the Electoral Commission regarding his spending in the general election, as confirmed by the watchdog. The Labour party had raised concerns about potential overspending by the Reform UK leader in his constituency, suggesting a possible breach of electoral regulations.

Allegations surfaced that Mr. Farage’s campaign in Clacton during the 2024 General Election inaccurately reported election expenses. Despite facing scrutiny for purportedly failing to disclose spending on various items like leaflets, banners, utility bills, and office refurbishments exceeding the prescribed limit, the Electoral Commission found no grounds to pursue the matter at a national level.

Essex Police initially considered examining the reported misreported expenditure by a political party but later decided against investigating due to a time limit restriction. In response to the accusations, a letter from the Electoral Commission to Reform UK stated that no credible evidence of electoral law offenses was identified, leading to the case being closed without further action.

A spokesman for the Electoral Commission clarified that after reviewing the Labour chairwoman’s concerns about Reform UK’s spending, no undisclosed expenses related to Mr. Farage’s Clacton campaign were found in the national expenditure records of the party. Election agent Peter Harris defended the campaign, labeling the complaints as politically motivated and baseless, emphasizing that due process was followed diligently.

Reform UK staunchly refuted any violations of election spending laws and discredited the accuser, Richard Everett, as a former disgruntled councillor who was expelled from the party months prior.
