Naomi Osaka has made the tough decision to withdraw from the Australian Open just hours before her scheduled third-round match. The 16th seed was set to face Maddison Inglis on Rod Laver Arena, but due to Osaka’s withdrawal, Inglis will now progress to the next round.
In a statement on Instagram, Osaka expressed her disappointment at having to stop playing due to a physical issue that requires attention following her previous match. She thanked her fans for their support and her team for their backing throughout the tournament.
Speaking to the media via Tennis Australia, Osaka revealed that the injury she experienced had troubled her before and worsened during warm-up for her upcoming match. She acknowledged the need for further tests, especially considering the changes her body has undergone post-pregnancy.
This marks Osaka’s second consecutive withdrawal from a tournament, following a similar situation at the Japan Open last year. Her recent matches in Melbourne included a hard-fought victory against Sorana Cirstea and a challenging three-set encounter with Antonia Ruzic.
Earlier this year, Osaka represented Japan at the United Cup in Perth before entering the Australian Open. She faced health issues during those matches but remained optimistic about her performance in Melbourne before the withdrawal.
Osaka had high expectations for herself at the Australian Open but emphasized taking each day and match as it comes. Her focus now shifts to recovery and preparing for future competitions.
