Murderer Matthew Armstrong and violent offender Daniel Washbourne have escaped from prison on New Year’s Day and are currently evading authorities. Avon and Somerset Police are actively seeking the fugitives, along with a third prisoner who is also suspected to have fled. Armstrong and Washbourne absconded from HMP Leyhill in South Gloucestershire sometime between 5pm and 8pm on January 1.
Law enforcement officials have urged the public to immediately contact 999 if they spot the escapees, as the pair are not local residents and have connections in different parts of the country. The prison authorities reported the escape to the police on Thursday evening, prompting an immediate investigation. CCTV footage capturing the attire of the men on New Year’s Day has been secured and released as part of the appeal for information.
Armstrong, a white male standing around 5ft 9ins tall with ginger hair and facial scars, was last seen in a burgundy/orange coat, grey cap, grey tracksuit bottoms with blue detailing, and black boots. He has affiliations with Warwickshire and was convicted in the late 2000s for a murder committed during a robbery in the same region.
Washbourne, on the other hand, is described as a slim white male approximately 5ft 6ins tall, with brown hair and a clean-shaven appearance. He was last observed in a cream fleece, blue tracksuit bottoms, blue hat, and black trainers. Washbourne has connections in Herefordshire and a history of convictions for offenses against individuals and false imprisonment.
The public is advised by Avon and Somerset Police not to approach the fugitives if encountered. In case of sighting either of the individuals, individuals are urged to dial 999 immediately and reference case number 5226000700. Alternatively, anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact 101 to aid ongoing investigations.
