Motorists are experiencing travel disruptions as two main motorways are shut down this morning due to icy conditions and weather alerts. The M60 anti-clockwise in Stockport is closed because of snowfall overnight, while southbound traffic on the M42 is halted following an incident earlier today.
In Warwickshire, the M42 is shut down northbound between junction nine for the M6 toll and junction 10 for Tamworth due to a police-led situation. National Severe weather warnings in amber and yellow have been issued for snow and ice, making travel risky in certain regions.
The Met Office reports that the UK is currently under cold Arctic air with temperatures significantly below average, widespread frost, ice, and an escalating chance of snow showers. Some areas, especially in the north and central regions, are expected to have snow settling on the ground, along with a risk of widespread ice leading to hazardous travel conditions.
A crash on the M56 eastbound this morning caused delays for drivers with two lanes closed near Princess Parkway at junction three. At one point, queues stretched back to Manchester Airport at junction five around 8 am. Although the M60 between Junction 1 and J27 reopened at 8 am, drivers are cautioned about challenging driving conditions today due to wintry weather.
Motorists are advised about travel disruptions as the M60 is shut down this morning due to snowfall. National Highways issued a warning stating that traffic is at a standstill on the #M60 in both directions between J1 and J27 in Stockport due to adverse driving conditions from overnight snow. Travel issues are probable today as a Met Office weather alert covers much of the country.
National Highways mentioned in a statement that the M42 in Warwickshire is closed northbound between J9 M6 Toll and J10 Tamworth due to a Police-led incident. Traffic is also halted on the M42 southbound between J10 and J9. More updates are expected, and patience is appreciated.
