A tragic incident has claimed the lives of a mother and her 15-year-old daughter after they reportedly consumed a tainted Christmas meal. Antonella Di Ielsi, 50, and Sara Di Vita, 15, passed away within hours of each other following a family dinner where they ate fish, mussels, and mushrooms. Authorities suspect that they developed fulminant hepatitis, leading to acute liver failure, due to food poisoning after experiencing symptoms such as sickness and stomach pain shortly after the meal in Pietracatella, Italy.
Sara was taken to the emergency room twice before eventually succumbing to the illness at Cardarelli Hospital. Antonella was admitted to the hospital shortly after showing similar symptoms. Vincenzo Cuzzone, a medical professional from Cardarelli Hospital, mentioned the unusual progression of the illness that led to their deaths despite medical care.
The family patriarch, Ganni Di Vita, also showed symptoms and was hospitalized in Rome’s Spallanzani Hospital. Their 18-year-old daughter, who did not eat dinner with them that evening, is under observation. Investigations are ongoing as authorities have collected food samples from the household to determine the source of the poisoning. The public prosecutor’s office has initiated post-mortem examinations to further understand the situation.
The local community expressed shock and grief over the tragedy. A vigil was held at the hospital, and Christmas celebrations were canceled. Five doctors from Cardarelli Hospital are under investigation for possible manslaughter. The prosecutor overseeing the case aims to uncover any negligence, identify the cause of the poisoning, and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
