In a recent interview, conservationist Mark Thomas discussed the efforts to protect a rare bird species in the United Kingdom. The successful preservation of the Montagu’s harrier population in Britain has been largely credited to a particularly prolific male named AU, who has fathered 16 juveniles, with 10 offspring born in the last two years.
Montagu’s harriers are migratory birds that breed in Europe during the spring after spending their winters in Africa and parts of Asia. Globally, the population of these birds is declining, with the species classified as of least concern on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) notes a rapid decline in the U.K.’s Montagu’s harrier population over the years. From about 30 breeding pairs in the 1950s to zero in the ’70s, the numbers fluctuated before declining sharply again between 2000 and 2003. Despite these challenges, recent breeding success has brought hope for the species’ survival in the U.K.
AU’s remarkable breeding success in recent years has been a significant factor in the species’ conservation efforts. After raising six chicks with two mates this year, conservationists are optimistic that his offspring, including two male juveniles spotted in the country, will contribute to the population in the future.
To protect the new hatchlings, conservationists have placed barriers around the two nests located on a British farm. The exact locations of the nests are kept confidential, with only scientists and landowners aware of their whereabouts. The RSPB’s partnership with farmers aims to safeguard the chicks from threats such as predators and agricultural activities.
In a new initiative, the RSPB has attached satellite trackers to two juvenile harriers for the first time. This tracking technology will enable researchers to monitor the birds’ migration patterns and potential return to the U.K. for breeding. The data collected from the satellite trackers will provide valuable insights for future conservation efforts and monitoring of the Montagu’s harrier population.
