Budget airlines are known for their no-frills flights, offering minimal service and cramped conditions. Despite this, many travelers are willing to endure these inconveniences for the cost savings, especially on shorter flights where luxury amenities are less important.
In recent years, budget airlines have started operating longer routes, making destinations once only reachable by full-service carriers now accessible through budget options. Air Arabia, for instance, will launch a new route from London Gatwick to Sharjah in spring 2026, clocking in at a lengthy seven hours and 50 minutes, making it one of the world’s longest budget airline flights.
While these flights lack the luxuries of traditional airlines, they provide an affordable means to explore the Middle East, with Sharjah Airport conveniently located just 30 minutes from Dubai. Current ticket prices from London to Sharjah start at £182, and the new route is expected to offer competitive pricing.
On Air Arabia flights, passengers can expect a standard layout with three seats on each side of a single-aisle cabin. Upgrade options for extra legroom and various package choices, such as Basic, Value, or Ultimate, are available when booking. Entertainment on board is limited to the SkyTime app for personal devices, as there are no seatback TVs.
Notably, Air Arabia is a dry airline, meaning no alcohol is served on board, reflecting the customs of the destination as Sharjah is also a dry emirate. Despite this, Sharjah offers a range of attractions, including the UNESCO-designated “Cultural Capital of the Arab World,” the Islamic Civilization Museum, sandy beaches overlooking the Persian Gulf, and the popular Al Majaz Waterfront area with its scenic views.
Travelers to Sharjah can explore family-friendly attractions like the Sharjah Aquarium and the Sharjah Classic Cars Museum, showcasing a range of vintage and modern automobiles. Whether staying in Sharjah or venturing to Dubai, visitors can experience the rich cultural heritage and scenic beauty of this lesser-known emirate in the UAE.
