In a recent wave of global protests, the Iranian flag has sparked controversy and dissent. Demonstrators in London targeted the Iranian embassy, with one scaling its balcony to take down the flag, viewed as a symbol of the oppressive regime.
Meanwhile, on the social media platform X, the official flag of the Islamic Republic was replaced with the pre-revolutionary “Lion-and-Sun” flag, which has gained traction as a symbol of resistance in Iran during ongoing protests against the government.
This change on X involved removing the emblem introduced after the 1979 Islamic Revolution and restoring the traditional Lion-and-Sun symbol that had adorned Iranian flags for centuries under the monarchy. All accounts associated with the Iranian state on the platform now feature the pre-revolutionary flag.
The alteration came about after a user contacted X’s head of product, Nikita Bear, and Elon Musk, requesting a modification to the Iranian flag emoji. Bear responded promptly, stating that the change was in progress and would be implemented shortly.
Following the update, even official Iranian government accounts briefly displayed the lion and sun protest flag before removing the emoji from their X accounts.
In a related development in London, during an anti-regime demonstration, a protester at the Iranian embassy removed the country’s flag from the balcony. The Metropolitan Police estimated that around 500 to 1,000 individuals participated in the protest in Kensington.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper voiced support for those opposing the Iranian government, emphasizing the importance of freedom of speech and peaceful assembly without fear of violence or retaliation. Cooper urged Iranian authorities to heed the concerns raised by the UK, France, and Germany regarding fundamental rights and the need for listening to dissenting voices.
