A couple in Braintree, Essex, has successfully reduced their monthly heating expenses to just £40 by participating in a new energy scheme trial. Terrence, 76, and Lesley Bridges, 75, replaced their gas boiler with a data center housing over 500 computer banks in their shed. This innovative system generates heat that is channeled into their hot water system, significantly reducing their heating costs from £375 to between £40 and £70 per month.
The Thermify HeatHub data center, a component of UK Power Networks’ SHIELD project, aims to assist low-income households in transitioning to net zero energy consumption. The Bridges also had solar panels installed on their roof as part of the scheme, further enhancing energy efficiency in their home.
Mr. Bridges expressed satisfaction with the results, mentioning the improved warmth throughout their bungalow. The compact size of the data center, equivalent to a chest freezer, allows for convenient installation without disrupting their living space. He highlighted the effectiveness of the system in maintaining a consistently warm environment, eliminating cold spots within the house.
Travis Theune, CEO of Thermify, emphasized the company’s mission to combat fuel poverty by providing clean and affordable energy solutions. Daniel Greenwood from Eastlight Community Homes commended the collaboration with SHIELD partners to implement the heat hub technology, showcasing its positive impact on reducing carbon emissions and heating costs.
The success of the trial at the Bridges’ residence has paved the way for expanding the initiative to benefit more households in the future. UK Power Networks aims to scale up the project to reach 100,000 units annually by 2030, ensuring that all households, particularly those in need, can access sustainable and cost-effective energy solutions for a greener future.
