“Human Remains Found in Search for Missing Snorkeler”

Date:

Tragic news has emerged in the search for a snorkeler who went missing on New Year’s Day, as human remains have been discovered.

Wen “Walter” Ren Gu, aged 32, disappeared while diving for crayfish at Ledge Point Beach, located to the north of Perth, Australia, on January 1. A significant rescue effort involving aerial and marine resources such as helicopters, drones, boats, jet skis, and multiple police divers was deployed in the search operation.

Despite extensive search efforts, the young man remained unaccounted for, resulting in a reduction of the operation on Friday. However, on Tuesday, Western Australia Police revealed that human remains had been discovered washed ashore at nearby Fence Reef Beach.

Although formal identification is pending, authorities believe the remains belong to Wen. A police spokesperson stated, “Formal identification is pending, but it is likely the body of the 32-year-old individual reported missing on Thursday. No foul play is suspected in his demise.”

A report will be compiled for the coroner, as reported by 7News. Ledge Point Beach, known for its white sandy shores and popular fishing activities, was where Wen and his companions entered the water around 10 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

His friends alerted the authorities around 3 p.m. after searching for Wen on the busy beach. The West Australian reported that the duration of Wen’s disappearance before being reported to authorities remains unclear.

According to sources, Wen was temporarily residing in Western Australia and was in the process of applying for a study visa in the country. Described as a cheerful and sociable individual, he had plans for further education in Australia.

Following Wen’s disappearance, local resident Jay Barrett highlighted the community’s collaborative search efforts, emphasizing the tragic nature of the incident. Barrett mentioned, “Despite not being far from the shore, the area has some dangerous spots. Caution must be exercised during diving as accidents can occur, leading to tragic outcomes.”

On a later date, a friend of Wen posted in a Ledge Point community group expressing the desire to continue the search efforts and appealing for any information or assistance from witnesses present at the scene.
