Nicky Henderson remains calm and confident leading up to the exciting showdown this Saturday between established star Constitution Hill and up-and-coming contender The New Lion. Constitution Hill had a flawless record of ten consecutive wins under rules until a series of setbacks last season, including falls at the Champion Hurdle and Aintree races.
Ahead of the new season, Henderson took the proactive step of sending Constitution Hill for a thorough assessment, likening it to a visit to an equine vision specialist. As the third favorite at 5-1 for the upcoming Champion Hurdle, Constitution Hill faces stiff competition from Willie Mullins’ mare Lossiemouth and The New Lion in the BetMGM Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle.
Despite an encouraging display at Newbury, where the 2023 Champion Hurdle winner showcased his form, the real challenge awaits against The New Lion, winner of the Turners Novices’ Hurdle at the prestigious Cheltenham Festival. The entry list also includes contenders like Anzadam from Willie Mullins’ stable and the reigning Champion Hurdle victor, Golden Ace.
Bookmakers Coral have the two frontrunners, Constitution Hill and The New Lion, neck and neck in the betting odds at 11-8. Henderson expressed confidence in his horse’s readiness, emphasizing a positive final workout with jockey Nico de Boinville.
As the race day approaches, Henderson is focused on preparations and strategic decisions, including the decision not to provide a pacemaker for his horse. While Henderson will be attending the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury, the owner, Michael Buckley, will be present at the crucial Newcastle event.
