Greenland’s Minister Expresses Concern Over US Threats
A government official from Greenland has voiced the feeling of betrayal among the island’s residents towards the United States while emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution. Naaja Nathanielsen, the business minister of the territory, addressed the media at Parliament, highlighting ongoing discussions with allies regarding potential responses to a hypothetical invasion by the US. She advocated for increased NATO presence on the island to counter potential threats from Russia and China.
Nathanielsen expressed how the threat of invasion by President Donald Trump has caused significant anxiety among the population. She commended the solidarity shown by Britain and European allies and emphasized the importance of seeking a peaceful solution rather than resorting to conflict. When asked about potential NATO support in case of an invasion, she highlighted the collective nature of the defense alliance, stating that an attack on one NATO member would be perceived as an attack on all.
The minister described the profound impact of the situation on the daily lives of Greenland’s population, noting widespread fear and sleepless nights among children. She also addressed Trump’s recent statements escalating the possibility of deploying troops to Greenland, suggesting that the motives behind such actions could involve interests in the island’s natural resources.
Nathanielsen expressed the overwhelming concern felt by Greenlanders regarding the US threats, citing a sense of betrayal and offense at the rhetoric used. However, she acknowledged the support shown by countries like the UK, France, and Germany in solidarity with Greenland and Denmark against the perceived threats from the US.
In response to these developments, US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are scheduled to meet with the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland to discuss Trump’s expressed interest in acquiring Greenland. The Greenlandic Prime Minister has reiterated the island’s stance of not being for sale and rejecting any notion of ownership or control by the US.
President Trump’s recent statements claiming the necessity of “taking Greenland” to prevent Russia or China from doing so have further fueled tensions in the region.
