“Grandparents Boost State Pension by £6,600”

Date:

Grandparents who assist in caring for their grandchildren during the February half-term could potentially increase their state pension by £6,600. If you are below the state pension age and provide childcare for your grandkids, you may be eligible for Specified Adult Childcare Credits. These credits, a form of National Insurance Credits, can help fill gaps in your National Insurance record. Research indicates that each year of transferred credit could add £330 to your state pension income, totaling nearly £6,600 over a 20-year retirement period.

To qualify, you must have been below the state pension age (currently 66) when caring for the child, and the child must be under 12 years old or under 17 if they have a disability. There is no minimum hourly requirement to be eligible for Specified Adult Childcare credits, meaning even those who cared for a child one day a week may qualify. Claims can also be backdated to 2011, allowing individuals to claim even if they are no longer providing care.

The child’s parent must be receiving Child Benefit to transfer the National Insurance Credit to the grandparent. This ensures that the parent continues to build their own National Insurance record for retirement, safeguarding their state pension forecast. Apart from grandparents, other family members like aunties, uncles, or anyone regularly caring for a child can also make a claim.

Most individuals need 35 qualifying National Insurance years to receive the full new state pension, currently valued at £230.25 weekly. Filling out form CA9176 on GOV.UK is necessary to claim Specified Adult Childcare Credits, requiring signatures from both the claimant and the parent transferring the Credit.

Recent data shows a significant number of successful applications for Specified Adult Childcare Credits, highlighting the potential impact on state pension income. Jon Greer, head of retirement policy at Quilter, emphasizes the importance of raising awareness about these credits to ensure that eligible individuals, especially those in lower-income families, do not miss out on valuable pension benefits.
