“Government Eases Business Rates for Struggling Pubs”

Date:

The government is set to provide relief to pubs by easing upcoming increases in business rates. The Treasury is expected to unveil measures to assist struggling pubs in the coming days. This relief package may involve adjustments to business rates and simplification of licensing regulations.

The decision follows pressure from the hospitality sector, with concerns raised about potential closures due to rising expenses. Changes to business rates set for April were to coincide with the phasing out of a Covid-related discount, leading to a substantial bill hike for pubs. Chancellor Rachel Reeves reduced the relief from 75% to 40% at the Budget, with the discount scheduled to end in April.

The recalculations would affect all non-domestic properties based on rental costs in 2024 and potential turnover. Reeves stated that over 750,000 retail, hospitality, and leisure properties would benefit from lower rates, backed by a £4.3 billion support package for three years. However, some pubs faced significant rate increases, prompting concerns within the industry.

The government’s reconsideration follows backlash from various sectors over tax and benefit changes. Industry leaders, including Emma McClarkin from the British Beer and Pub Association, welcomed the potential relief for pubs nationwide. CAMRA Chairman Ash Corbett-Collins urged immediate action to ensure pubs’ survival and prosperity.

While the move is tailored to pubs, other businesses may face challenges. UKHospitality chief Kate Nicholls called for a broader solution to assist all affected sectors. MP Carolyn Harris emphasized the importance of supporting the spirits industry within the hospitality sector.

Government officials have acknowledged the economic and cultural significance of pubs in the UK, highlighting the importance of supporting these establishments. The Mirror has been actively advocating for the preservation of pubs through the “Your Pub Needs You” campaign.
