Statistics Canada has reported that a significant number of drivers crossed the Gordie Howe International Bridge into Canada shortly after its recent opening. The much-anticipated bridge, which links Windsor and Detroit, began welcoming traffic on July 27 following several weeks of delays. According to preliminary data from StatCan, there were 18,900 return trips by Canadian residents from the United States via the Gordie Howe bridge during its initial five days of operation. Similarly, 18,100 U.S. residents made their way into Canada by crossing the same bridge during this period.
In comparison, the Ambassador Bridge and the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel, two other key border crossings in the region, recorded a total of 52,700 inbound trips by both Canadian and U.S. residents over the same five-day timeframe. Furthermore, StatCan noted that 4,100 commercial trucks entered Canada through the Gordie Howe bridge in the last five days of July.
