A 22-year-old soccer player tragically fell to his death while skiing after veering off a difficult slope. Nikolas Begalke plummeted approximately 66 feet, landing in a wooded area below the trail on a Saturday afternoon. Despite immediate medical attention, his death was confirmed on-site. Authorities are treating the incident as a heartbreaking accident with no signs of external involvement at the Hochzillertal ski resort in Kaltenbach, Austria.
Hailing from Gelsenkirchen, Germany, Nikolas was a footballer for several clubs, including SpVgg Horsthausen, SC Westfalia Herne, and DSC Wanne-Eickel. He had recently joined Horsthausen in 2024, competing in Germany’s eighth-tier Kreisliga A. Described as not only a talented player but also a kind-hearted individual and supportive teammate, his passing deeply impacted those who knew him.
Nikolas also played a pivotal role in Westfalia Herne’s success, helping the team secure a promotion from the seventh tier to the sixth. Remembered with appreciation for his contributions, his former club acknowledged his leadership and dedication on and off the field.
In addition to his athletic pursuits, Nikolas pursued studies in International Business Management at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Dortmund, Germany, and Business Entrepreneurship at Dordt University in Sioux Center, Iowa, USA. His time at Dordt University was marked by his intellectual curiosity, compassionate nature, and unwavering support for his peers, despite facing setbacks due to injuries.
His soccer coach, Eric Bourdo, fondly recalled Nikolas as a determined and empathetic individual who continuously strived to learn and uplift those around him. Despite challenges, Nikolas’s positive influence on Dordt’s men’s soccer program was deeply valued by his teammates and coaches alike.
