Two French bar managers were questioned in connection with an investigation into the fire’s origin, according to Beatrice Pilloud, the attorney general of Valais Canton.
During a press briefing on January 2, the regional attorney general discussed the scrutiny of safety protocols at the popular bar. She mentioned that videos, interviews with individuals, observations, and the interrogation of two French managers and patrons who escaped have been conducted. A list of attendees is being used for identification purposes.
Pilloud stated that the examination will focus on the safety measures and operational procedures at Le Constellation. This will involve assessing the facilities’ ability to accommodate guests, scrutinizing recent renovations, materials used, and verifying the bar’s licenses.
Fire investigators will also review fire safety protocols and evacuation routes. Pilloud concluded by mentioning that once all these aspects are thoroughly inspected, a decision will be made on potential criminal charges.
Authorities confirmed during a press conference that the fire was likely triggered by sparklers in the crowded bar. Attorney General Beatrice Pilloud explained that the ignition occurred from sparkler candles placed atop champagne bottles that were too close to the ceiling, resulting in a rapid spread of fire.
The blaze engulfed the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, predominantly frequented by young revelers celebrating the New Year. Numerous harrowing testimonies of panic emerged as patrons desperately tried to flee the burning establishment, suspected to have been ignited by sparklers attached to champagne bottles.
Concerned loved ones have set up social media pages to help locate individuals who are still unaccounted for.
