A former teacher, Anthony Redmond, 54, residing on Fort Austin Avenue in Plymouth, has been convicted of engaging in sexual activities with two students, including an incident that occurred in a school cupboard. Redmond, who used to teach geography at a Plymouth school in the 2000s, faced trial at Plymouth Crown Court following a police investigation.
He faced multiple charges, including five counts of abusing his position of trust by having sexual interactions with a minor, two counts of similar misconduct with another student, and one count of indecency with a child. The offenses took place in various locations such as his residence, school premises, and a hotel, with one specific incident unfolding in a school storage area.
During the trial, one of Redmond’s victims testified that she felt “used and worthless” due to his actions, revealing that he had taken the virginity of both victims. Despite Redmond’s denial of the charges, the jury unanimously found him guilty on all counts. Following the verdict, his lawyer, Ali Rafiti, requested a pre-sentence report be prepared, highlighting Redmond’s previous good character.
Judge Robert Linford approved the request for the report and granted Redmond bail until his sentencing scheduled for February 10. The judge commended the jury for their dedication, acknowledging their commitment to the trial that spanned over the Christmas and New Year period. He assured them that if they were summoned for jury duty in the next decade, they could be excused if they wished.
