A surprising turn of events has unfolded in the tragic deaths of Spencer Tepe and Monique Tepe, as Monique’s former husband, Michael McKee, has been apprehended and accused of their murders. The lifeless bodies of Monique, aged 39, and Spencer, aged 37, were discovered in their residence on December 30, prompting concerns from coworkers when Spencer did not show up for work. Responding to the sounds of children crying inside the home, authorities conducted a welfare check, revealing a gruesome scene.
Although the Tepes’ children were physically unharmed, it was evident that their parents had been brutally killed in their presence. Police reports indicated that Spencer had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, while Monique had been shot at least once in the chest.
Following the initiation of an investigation, law enforcement ruled out the possibility of a murder-suicide and released footage of a person of interest near the Tepes’ residence. Subsequently, on January 10, Michael McKee was taken into custody and charged with the murders of his former wife and her spouse, leaving neighbors astounded.
Through surveillance footage in the Columbus neighborhood of Ohio, detectives identified McKee as a suspect and located his vehicle in Rockford, around 79 miles northwest of Chicago, according to court records obtained by ABC7 Chicago.
McKee, who entered a plea of not guilty in court, was previously wed to Monique for nearly two years. The couple married in August 2015 and finalized their divorce in June 2017, with the divorce decree citing irreconcilable differences as the grounds for the separation.
Under the terms of the divorce agreement, McKee retained their former marital property in Virginia, while Monique resided in Westerville at the time of their divorce proceedings. The couple did not have children during their marriage, and spousal support was not awarded.
Expressing disbelief at the unfolding events, one of McKee’s neighbors, Gera-Lind Kolarik, shared her interactions with the accused, stating, “He did not seem like somebody that would do something like this… I sat down with this man, and talked with him at the pool, barbecuing, about what a beautiful day it is, and then he turns out to be [an alleged] killer.”
In the wake of McKee’s arrest, the Tepe family, who recently gathered for a life celebration service, issued a statement expressing gratitude for the progress in seeking justice for Monique and Spencer. They thanked the City of Columbus Police Department and other law enforcement agencies for their relentless efforts and support during the tragedy, emphasizing the importance of holding the responsible party fully accountable.
As the case progresses, the family remains dedicated to honoring the memories of Monique and Spencer, ensuring the well-being of the children left behind, and preserving the love and light the couple brought into the world.
