A man has been handed a 30-year prison sentence for the tragic killing of his own daughter. Shockingly, he even sent disturbing text messages to his sons following the incident.
The victim, Ryan al Najjar, was discovered bound and gagged in a pond in a secluded country park just a month after her 18th birthday. Her own father, Khaled al Najjar, was responsible for her death, claiming that she was straying too far from their cultural beliefs, with alleged assistance from her brothers Muhanad, 25, and Muhamad, 24.
Ryan’s parents had sought asylum in the Netherlands to escape the turmoil in Syria, but the family’s attempt at a fresh start took a tragic turn when Ryan was brutally murdered due to her lifestyle choices that clashed with her father’s views.
After a thorough investigation, it was revealed that Ryan’s body was wrapped in duct tape and submerged in water at a nearby nature reserve. Traces of her father’s DNA were found on the tape, suggesting his involvement in the heinous act. Disturbingly, evidence indicated that Ryan was still alive when she was disposed of in the water, accompanied by chilling remarks from her father expressing regret for not burying her.
During the trial, it emerged that the brothers had driven Ryan to the remote location and left her alone with their father, leading the court to hold them complicit in her murder. Phone data and physical evidence linked the brothers to the crime scene, including algae on their shoes.
Following the trial, the father fled back to Syria, while Ryan’s brothers were also convicted for their roles in the crime, each receiving a 20-year prison sentence. Despite appearing integrated into society, tensions within the family escalated over Ryan’s behavior, with her mother describing her husband as abusive and controlling.
Ryan’s mother recounted instances of domestic violence and fear instilled by her husband, who allegedly sent threatening messages from her phone to implicate her in the murder. Descriptions of the father as violent and unjust were echoed by Ryan’s sister Iman, who highlighted the oppressive atmosphere at home and the tragic events leading to Ryan’s untimely death.
Iman further revealed the challenges faced by Ryan at school due to her hijab, which ultimately culminated in a tragic outcome. The family’s history of abuse and control shed light on the circumstances that led to the devastating loss of Ryan’s life.
