In her youth in Detroit, Patty Czajka was captivated by a Canadian television series based in Prince Edward Island. Every Sunday, she would tune in to “Road to Avonlea” with her grandmother, developing a fondness for Mag Ruffman, who portrayed Aunt Olivia in the 1990s show. When Czajka learned about a fan convention in P.E.I. dedicated to the series and featuring Ruffman, she was eager to attend and secured her ticket.
Describing Ruffman as her childhood version of a Disney princess, Czajka expressed her excitement at being in P.E.I. for the convention. Fans of “Road to Avonlea” from around the globe gathered on the Island for the sold-out event. The beloved Canadian series, which aired in over 100 countries, premiered in 1990 and concluded after seven seasons in 1996.
The show depicted the life of young Sarah Stanley, played by future Academy Award winner Sarah Polley, who is sent to live with her deceased mother’s relatives at the dawn of the 20th century. Loosely inspired by Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novels, attendees at the three-day convention enjoyed oyster and wine tastings, panel discussions with the cast and crew, and visits to filming locations and Montgomery’s significant sites on the Island.
Edward Lemon, assistant director of Fine Book Fairs, organizers of the convention, highlighted the enduring appeal of the show’s themes of kindness, friendship, and community. Ruffman shared her delight in experiencing the fans’ enthusiasm at the convention, emphasizing the lasting connection people have with the show’s characters.
Czajka, now watching the series with her three children, expressed joy in sharing the nostalgic program with them. She praised its rarity in being a show suitable for family viewing, noting its lasting impact and timeless appeal.
