A man known as the ‘fake admiral’ has confessed to crashing a ceremony where wreaths were being laid on Remembrance Sunday while dressed in full navy attire.
Jonathan Carley, aged 64 and hailing from the Harlech area in Gwynedd, Wales, acknowledged that he pretended to be an admiral by wearing the navy uniform during the event. He was observed saluting the war memorial as wreaths were being placed on the ground before an inquiry was initiated.
Photos circulating widely on social media purportedly show the individual donning the uniform along with 12 medals resembling those of a high-ranking navy official. The Royal Navy expressed that impersonating a naval officer was deemed disrespectful to veterans.
Subsequently, he was formally accused of wearing a uniform or outfit bearing the insignia of His Majesty’s Forces without authorization.
The ‘fake admiral’ was also spotted showcasing the Distinguished Service Order, a decoration typically conferred upon infantry officers. Notably, no active Royal Navy personnel have received the DSO, and it has not been granted for over three decades.
Mr. Carley attended an early hearing at Llandudno Magistrates’ Court today and pleaded guilty to the charges. He encountered challenging weather conditions on his way to court due to snow and ice, like many others this morning. His legal counsel requested additional time to confer with him before the session, which was granted by District Judge Gwyn Jones.
After the decision to prosecute the individual, Chief Inspector Trystan Bevan remarked, “We recognize that this incident has sparked considerable public unease, especially given its occurrence on Remembrance Sunday.”
“We encourage the public to refrain from speculative discussions online and avoid sharing any content that could jeopardize future court proceedings,” he added.
Carley was fined for his admission of guilt. The district judge imposed a fine of £500 on him and instructed him to cover total costs amounting to £285.
Addressing Carley, District Judge Gwyn Jones stated that he had intended to deceive the marshals and caused significant distress to the families of servicemen by his actions.
He commented on the unfortunate choice of actions, saying, “It is regrettable that you opted for such behavior. Others who are acquainted with him are surprised by his extremely unwise decision on Remembrance Sunday,” as conveyed by the judge.
