“Elon Musk’s AI Company Sued Over Deepfake Scandal”

Date:

A lawsuit has been filed against Elon Musk’s AI company by the mother of one of his children, alleging the release of sexually exploitative deepfake images. Ashley St. Clair, 27, claims that the company’s Grok chatbot allowed users to create such images of her, causing her distress. The lawsuit, filed in New York City against xAI, states that the images included manipulated photos of St. Clair at a young age and as an adult in inappropriate poses. St. Clair, who is Jewish, described herself as a writer and political strategist.

Following global criticism over sexualized images, Musk’s social media platform X announced restrictions on Grok’s ability to edit photos of real people in revealing clothing. When asked about the lawsuit, xAI responded with “Legacy Media Lies.” St. Clair reported the deepfakes to X, which initially claimed they did not violate policies but later agreed not to allow her images to be misused.

St. Clair mentioned suffering emotional distress due to the digitally altered images and living in fear of those viewing them. Seeking damages for emotional distress and seeking court orders to prevent further deepfakes, she filed the lawsuit in state Supreme Court. X later transferred the lawsuit to federal court and countersued St. Clair in Texas, alleging a breach of user agreement terms.

Carrie Goldberg, St. Clair’s lawyer, criticized the countersuit as unprecedented and defended St. Clair’s rights in New York. X announced additional safeguards for Grok, including limiting image creation to paid accounts, to enhance accountability and combat inappropriate content. The platform reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for child exploitation and unwanted sexual content.
