Elon Musk Foresees Optional Work in Robot-Filled Future

Date:

Elon Musk shared his perspective on the future of work and the role of robots and AI in it. The billionaire predicted that work would become optional, likening it to tending a vegetable garden. Speaking at the recent US-Saudi Investment Forum in Washington DC, Musk stated, “My prediction is that work will be optional. It’ll be like playing sports or a video game. If you want to work, it’s similar to buying vegetables from a store or growing them in your backyard, which is more challenging but some people enjoy it.”

Musk suggested that a significant shift could occur within the next 10 to 20 years as millions of robots join the workforce, leading to increased productivity. However, economists view Musk’s envisioned future as a significant challenge. Ioana Marinescu, an economist and professor at the University of Pennsylvania, pointed out the historical trend of diminishing returns in technological advancements and questioned the timeline for full-scale automation of the labor market proposed by Musk.

While acknowledging the potential for complete automation, Marinescu raised concerns about the immediate impact of mass job displacement caused by AI automation. Despite Musk’s history of bold predictions, such as manned missions to Mars by 2022 and widespread use of driverless vehicles by 2025, many of these forecasts have not materialized. Nevertheless, Musk remains optimistic about the possibilities of major technological breakthroughs in the near future, including Artificial Intelligence overcoming human limitations.
