Police have confirmed that two individuals sustained serious injuries when an elderly driver experienced a medical emergency causing his vehicle to veer onto a sidewalk on New Year’s Eve.
The incident occurred in Bulwell, Nottinghamshire, where three pedestrians were struck by the vehicle. Emergency services responded promptly, with three ambulances dispatched to the scene. Authorities have provided an update on the conditions of the injured parties and the driver involved.
According to Nottinghamshire Police, a 78-year-old woman suffered multiple severe injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital. Additionally, a 34-year-old man sustained a serious leg injury and is also undergoing treatment. The third pedestrian involved in the accident sustained minor injuries and did not require hospitalization.
The driver, a 70-year-old man, was initially hospitalized but has since been discharged. While no arrests have been made, an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing.
Sergeant Craig Luckett from Nottinghamshire Police’s roads policing unit expressed concern over the distressing nature of the incident, emphasizing the serious injuries sustained by one of the victims. He extended sympathies to all those affected and urged anyone with relevant information to contact authorities.
The incident follows a previous occurrence in April where an octogenarian was hit by a car on the same road. Fortunately, the individual sustained injuries that were not life-altering or life-threatening and was discharged from the hospital shortly after.
