Ed Sheeran’s performances at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts have been called off due to severe weather alerts, adding to the challenges faced by a tour marked by controversy following Macklemore’s removal for pro-Palestinian remarks during a concert.
The decision to cancel Sheeran’s shows at Kraft’s Gillette Stadium this weekend was made in light of impending storm conditions in Boston and New England, with wind gusts of up to 64 kilometers per hour expected in Foxborough, the stadium’s location near Boston.
Messina Touring, Sheeran’s touring organization, announced the cancellation in an Instagram post, citing consultations with local authorities and weather warnings. Ticket refunds will be processed through the original point of purchase for all customers.
The development comes shortly after Macklemore revealed plans for his new tour benefiting Palestinian causes, criticizing the influence of wealthy individuals in shaping public discourse, particularly regarding controversial issues like the Palestinian conflict.
Prior to being removed from the tour, Macklemore had performed at two shows in New Jersey, where he vocalized support for Palestinians. The decision to remove Macklemore was attributed to pressure from stadium owners, including Robert Kraft, who expressed concerns about the rapper’s controversial statements.
Despite the tour disruptions and lineup changes, Sheeran emphasized that decisions regarding performers were made by venues and promoters, distancing himself from the controversy surrounding Macklemore’s removal.
Fans seeking refunds for the cancelled shows were reassured by the Massachusetts Attorney General that they would be accommodated, following complaints from consumers struggling to secure refunds through Ticketmaster due to lineup alterations. Ticketmaster eventually agreed to refund tickets for the impacted shows after intervention from the AG’s office.
Sheeran, who faced criticism for his handling of the situation, expressed regret over being drawn into political controversies, reiterating his stance on remaining apolitical in his music career. The fallout from the tour adjustments has raised questions about the role of artists and their engagement with sensitive political issues in the public sphere.
