“Cruise Lines Crack Down on Prohibited Items & Gadgets”

Date:

Cruise travel offers a unique way to explore the world, but it comes with specific etiquette rules and safety regulations that passengers must adhere to. Several cruise lines have recently imposed bans on certain common travel items due to safety concerns or disruptive behavior. Passengers are advised to check with their cruise line regarding prohibited items before packing for their trip.

One common issue for passengers is the high cost of onboard WiFi, especially for longer journeys or for those using multiple devices. Some passengers have attempted to circumvent these costs by bringing their own internet devices like the Starlink Mini. However, cruise companies have not approved of this practice, leading to bans on passenger-owned Starlink devices by cruise lines such as Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian. The concern is that these devices could interfere with the ship’s systems and WiFi services.

Another trend that has been targeted by cruise lines is the use of routers in cabins to connect multiple devices to a single WiFi connection. While this was once a popular money-saving tactic, cruise lines are now cracking down on it due to cybersecurity concerns. Passengers have reported having their routers confiscated, citing potential cybersecurity risks.

In an unexpected move, Carnival Cruises in the USA implemented a ban on paper clack fans following a dance craze sparked by the song “Boots on the Ground.” The dance, popularized on TikTok, involved using these fans to accompany the music. Carnival decided to restrict their use in nightclubs and indoor dance floors for safety reasons, although they are still allowed on decks.

Moreover, several cruise lines have prohibited the use of Bluetooth speakers on balconies due to noise levels, disturbance to other passengers, and the risk of blocking important announcements. Companies like Celebrity, Carnival, and MSC have enforced bans on these devices.

Carnival has also announced a ban on upside-down pineapples, a symbol associated with swinging, on their cruises. The company’s guidelines for stateroom door decorations emphasize the prohibition of offensive or inappropriate messages, nudity, profanity, and sexual suggestions.
