Cineplex has announced that it is exploring the possibility of a sale with the appointment of Bill Walker, former head of Landmark Cinemas, as its new CEO. While the board remains optimistic about the company’s future, it is actively considering various options to enhance shareholder value through a Strategic Review process.
In a recent memo, it was stated that the Board has initiated a thorough evaluation to identify opportunities for value enhancement for all shareholders. This includes exploring potential avenues such as a company sale as part of the Strategic Review. Goldman Sachs and TD Securities have been appointed as co-financial advisors for this strategic assessment.
Cineplex, known as the largest cinema chain in Canada, operates over 1,600 screens in nearly 170 theaters nationwide, with a workforce of more than 10,000 employees across its entertainment venues. The company had previously been in talks for a $2.8 billion acquisition by Cineworld Group PLC in 2019, but the deal ultimately fell through.
During the ongoing strategic review, former CEO Ellis Jacob will act as a special advisor to the board. Phyllis Yaffe, chair of Cineplex’s board, highlighted the company’s strong market position and leading entertainment assets, expressing the belief that the current market valuation may not accurately represent its business strength and long-term potential.
Bill Walker, with his experience in leading Landmark Cinemas and overseeing its sale to Kinepolis in 2017, expressed support for the strategic review. He emphasized the importance of operational excellence, exceptional guest experiences, and delivering superior results for shareholders regardless of the review’s outcome.
