Keir Starmer has revealed his selection to take over from Peter Mandelson as the United Kingdom’s ambassador to the United States. Christian Turner, a highly experienced diplomat who previously served as the Political Director at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCDO), has been appointed as the new UK representative in Washington, DC.
Earlier in May, it was announced that Dr. Turner would be assuming the role of UK Ambassador to the United Nations. However, a recent announcement from No10 confirmed his reassignment from New York to Washington, DC, where he will now serve as Britain’s liaison in the US capital.
This change follows the dismissal of Lord Mandelson as the Ambassador to Washington due to concerns surrounding his association with the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Dr. Turner, a seasoned diplomat, has previously held positions such as the British High Commissioner to Pakistan and served as an international affairs advisor and Deputy National Security Advisor during Theresa May’s tenure as Prime Minister.
Keir Starmer expressed his satisfaction with Christian Turner’s appointment, highlighting the importance of the special relationship between the UK and the US. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper also praised Turner’s diplomatic expertise and emphasized the significance of maintaining strong partnerships worldwide, particularly with the US.
