A suspected car bomb targeted an SUV belonging to a high-ranking Ukrainian defense or security official in Kyiv. The incident occurred while the vehicle had two individuals inside or nearby, with reports suggesting that a senior officer was the intended target.
One man was hospitalized following the explosion, although details about his identity and condition were not disclosed. The blast occurred as the rear door of the SUV was being opened, resulting in a “serviceman” sustaining shrapnel injuries. Fortunately, a woman in the vicinity on Heroes of the Dnieper Street remained unharmed.
Authorities categorized the explosion as a “terrorist” act, possibly triggered by a remote control device. While it was unclear initially whether it was a Russian assassination attempt, a swift response from law enforcement and security personnel ensued at the scene.
Law enforcement, bomb disposal experts, dog handlers, and other emergency services quickly arrived at the site in Kyiv’s Obolonskyi district. Conflicting reports emerged regarding the car’s ownership, with some sources indicating it belonged to a senior defense official and others suggesting it was linked to the police.
According to a statement from the prosecutor’s office, the victim was identified as a “serviceman.” Both Ukraine and Russia have previously targeted senior military and intelligence officials in assassination plots during the ongoing conflict.
The explosion occurred amidst concerns that Vladimir Putin might be considering further invasions of ex-Soviet states if a peace deal favoring one side is reached in Ukraine. Moldova’s president warned that any such agreement would only temporarily halt the hostilities, allowing Russia to regroup and launch fresh attacks.
Maia Sandu cautioned that without significant pressure from US President Donald Trump, who claimed progress towards a peace agreement, Russia’s ambitions to exert control over Ukraine and Europe would be emboldened. Sandu emphasized the need for increased pressure on Russia to bring an end to the conflict in Ukraine and achieve lasting peace.
