Are you willing to sell your home and move to a new country to start afresh?
An increasing number of Brits are saying ‘yes’ to that question. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), there has been a nearly 10% rise in Brits relocating abroad since 2023, with 639,000 individuals reportedly leaving the UK last year in pursuit of a different lifestyle. One family decided to take the leap and relocate to an area in Canada filled with Brits and high costs, seeking a fresh beginning.
Jack Masterson, 36, and his wife Natalie, 35, made the move from Huddersfield in Yorkshire to a lively Canadian city. Jack, a videographer, mentioned, “Natalie and I had been contemplating the idea of moving elsewhere for years. Eventually, the question shifted to ‘where and when’.”
“We wanted a new environment for our children away from England, and that’s when we found out about the Canadian Express Entry visa.” With Natalie’s background as a former NHS nurse, the Yorkshire family, accompanied by their two children, were able to relocate to Canada within six months through the Express Entry visa program, which includes various categories, predominantly for healthcare professionals. Launched in 2023, the program aims to address the shortage of healthcare workers in Canada, attracting numerous Brits in recent years.
Jack explained, “Canada was an obvious choice for our family with this opportunity available. There’s a scarcity of nurses here. Natalie moved in March, and a month later, the kids and I followed suit – if you are up for an adventure, this is the place to be.”
Having settled in North Vancouver near Grouse Mountain in British Columbia, Jack observed that the area has become a favored destination for Brits seeking a change. Locals even humorously refer to Brits living in the region as ‘limeys’, a term originating from the 19th century referring to British sailors being provided with lime or lemon juice, now commonly used to describe a British person.
“We have a thriving ‘limey’ community here in Lynn Valley,” Jack remarked. “However, one thing missing is the English pub culture and traditional drinking spots.”
Despite the differences, Jack noted that while living costs may be lower compared to the UK, everyday items in Canada can be expensive. “Prices are shocking. A loaf of bread can set you back about CA$5, approximately £2.50 – much more than what it costs in a Tesco or Sainsbury’s,” he shared.
Nevertheless, Jack emphasized, “Life in Vancouver has been an adjustment, but a change I cherish. Canada offers a more scenic environment compared to Yorkshire, with friendly people, and the children adore it.”
Simon Hood, an expert in relocation and Executive Director at John Mason International, the company that assisted the family’s move to Canada, supported Jack’s sentiments. Hood mentioned that while Canada faces similar economic challenges post-COVID, many individuals are choosing to relocate not solely based on affordability but for the overall experience and opportunities Canada offers.
