A British man tragically lost his life on New Year’s Eve during a holiday in the Gambia, leaving his family in deep sorrow. Michael Clarke, a beloved father from Yorkshire, passed away while swimming in a pool at Mansea Beach Hotel in Kololi, situated on the Atlantic coast of the popular West African nation. The incident occurred on December 31.
Reports indicate that the pool was unattended at the time, with no staff or lifeguards present to provide assistance. Mr. Clarke, aged 64, is believed to have experienced a cardiac arrest, likely induced by the low water temperature, after entering the pool. With no immediate aid accessible, he unfortunately drowned.
Following the tragic event, his family is working to bring his body back home and has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to facilitate the repatriation process. His daughter, Victoria Walker, has appealed for donations to assist in repatriating her father’s remains and returning him to the UK.
Victoria shared, “My father quietly battled depression for over two decades, and in recent months, he had embarked on a genuine journey towards healing and mental well-being. This trip held great significance as it marked his first venture abroad in 20 years, a milestone he had diligently prepared for.”
She continued, “The profound sorrow lies in the fact that this trip was intended to be a turning point for him, a new beginning rather than an end. Our family is grappling with the unexpected turn of events.”
From Sheffield, Victoria expressed gratitude for any support to cover the funeral and repatriation expenses. She urged, “We seek assistance – any contribution, regardless of size, will directly aid in bringing him back and providing him with a proper farewell.”
A GoFundMe page established in memory of the deceased has garnered over £1,200 from 40 donors, with a target of $10,000 to support his family during this difficult time.
