A large black bear, known as Yellow 2120, took up residence beneath a Los Angeles home for over a month, causing damage to the property. The homeowner, Ken Johnson, sought help from wildlife officials and later enlisted the assistance of BEAR League, a California-based non-profit specializing in bear management.
BEAR League successfully evicted the bear using non-lethal methods, including placing an “unwelcome” mat that delivers an electric shock. Johnson, who had tried various tactics to deter the bear, expressed relief at the swift resolution. The bear, weighing over 500 pounds, was coaxed out from under the house and has not returned since the eviction.
Johnson lamented the damage caused by the bear, which added to his challenges following a previous wildfire and job loss. Despite his efforts to handle the situation independently, he acknowledged the need for professional intervention. The bear’s presence had been unsettling for Johnson, who now aims to repair the property and move forward.
Following the successful eviction, the bear briefly returned before moving on from the area. Johnson’s ordeal highlights the importance of coexisting with wildlife and seeking appropriate assistance in managing such situations.
