“Darkwing Duck Returns: A Reimagined Adventure”

Date:

A mysterious figure emerges through a cloud of smoke, embodying the element of surprise! The iconic theme song of the 90s animated series, Darkwing Duck, teases the unexpected return of the beloved show.

Disney+ has officially approved a brand-new Darkwing Duck series, marking 35 years since the original show first aired. The fresh storyline introduces a twist where Darkwing Duck finds himself in an unfamiliar world oblivious to his heroic adventures. A rebellious teenager named Duckie, well-versed in his legendary past, convinces the ego-driven vigilante to resume his crime-fighting duties.

Although the plot is original, it was crafted in collaboration with Tad Stones, the creator of the original series. Several beloved characters from the classic franchise will return, voiced by renowned actors. Mark Hamill is set to lend his voice to Drake Mallard, alias Darkwing Duck, the fearless guardian of St. Canard and the enigmatic “Terror that Flaps in the Night.”

The announcement of the reboot on Instagram sparked mixed reactions among fans, particularly concerning the replacement of the original voice actor, Jim Cummings, by Mark Hamill. Some fans expressed sentiments like, “Darkwing Duck = Jim Cummings. Full stop. Respect your legends, Disney,” emphasizing Cummings’ legacy in defining the character.

In the new series, Seth Rogen, a Canadian actor, will voice the role of Darkwing’s scatterbrained sidekick, Launchpad McQuack, while Lizzy Caplan will portray his adopted daughter, Gosalyn Mallard. Additionally, Venezuelan American actress Lilimar Hernandez, known for voicing Valentina (Val) Ortiz in Inside Out 2, will take on the role of Duckie.

The original Darkwing Duck premiered on the Disney Channel in 1991, airing 91 episodes and receiving an Emmy nomination. The show continued in syndication until around 1997 and also inspired video games for Nintendo NES and Game Boy.

Point Grey Pictures, Seth Rogen’s production company, known for producing a special edition of The Muppet Show for Disney+, will also be involved in the production of the new Darkwing Duck series. The Point Grey team embraced the character’s catchphrase in their statement, saying, “Disney said, ‘Let’s get dangerous,’ and we said, ‘Hell yeah.'”
