“Canadian astronaut to launch with innovative blood clot monitoring tech”

Date:

Canadian Space Agency astronaut Joshua Kutyrk is scheduled to launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on October 1, carrying innovative Canadian technology onboard. Living and working in space poses various health risks due to the human body’s challenges in adapting to low gravity conditions. NASA is particularly concerned about the potential development of blood clots in astronauts during extended space missions.

To address this concern, NASA has collaborated with Vancouver-based Response Biomedical to introduce new technology aimed at monitoring blood clot formation in space. The device, known as Acute Care Testing in Space (ACTIS), utilizes advanced technology to detect the presence of D-dimer, a protein fragment indicative of blood clots, in astronauts’ blood samples. This technology is not only essential for identifying blood clot risks but also offers the capability to test for other medical conditions like heart attacks and infectious diseases such as COVID-19.

The efficiency of ACTIS lies in its ability to provide rapid results within minutes, a crucial feature for timely medical interventions both in space and on Earth, especially in remote communities where access to healthcare services may be limited. The portability and effectiveness of this technology have garnered attention from NASA, positioning Canada as a key player in advancing health and life science research for space exploration.

The potential success of ACTIS on the International Space Station opens up possibilities for its utilization in future space missions to destinations like the moon or Mars. This achievement not only showcases the adaptability and value of Canadian technology but also highlights the country’s contribution to cutting-edge innovations in space exploration.
