“Principal Seeks Answers and Compensation After Hyundai SUV Fire”

Date:

Three months following a distressing vehicle fire incident, Jason Pelletier remains in anticipation of explanations and seeking further compensation from car manufacturer Hyundai. On a morning in June, while commuting to work, the school principal was driving his Santa Fe on a busy highway in Toronto’s north end when flames erupted from the hood. He observed dense black smoke and flames emerging, rendering the engine and brakes unresponsive.

Struggling to navigate through traffic on Highway 401, Pelletier managed to exit the vehicle before a sudden explosion engulfed the front end. What unsettles him further is that he had serviced his SUV at the dealership the day prior, replacing a critical head gasket. Post-service, he detected a burning odor but dismissed it as residue, as advised by the service manager.

Not long after, a warning message appeared on the vehicle’s touchscreen, indicating a potential issue with the engine control system. Despite reaching out to the service manager with concerns about smoke emanating from the hood, Pelletier received no response before the vehicle burst into flames.

Hyundai Canada declined an interview request but emphasized safety as their primary concern. An investigation by Hycay Consulting Engineering, in collaboration with the insurance company, aims to determine the fire’s cause. Notably, Hyundai Canada did not address inquiries regarding previous vehicle fire incidents or recent preventive measures.

Transport Canada received 1,140 reports of vehicle fires between 2016 and 2026, with Hyundai accounting for 168 incidents. An investigation by CBC Marketplace and Go Public in 2021 highlighted issues with Hyundai and Kia vehicles, emphasizing the importance of addressing recurring problems promptly.

Despite receiving compensation from his insurer, Pelletier seeks reimbursement for personal belongings lost in the fire, emphasizing the sentimental value of some items. His Santa Fe, currently undergoing forensic examination, prompts him to question the necessity of additional recalls and the company’s commitment to consumer safety.

In light of the ordeal, Pelletier has opted to purchase a different brand of SUV, expressing reluctance to drive a Hyundai again. This decision marks a shift from his previous loyalty to the brand.
