NASA’s Swift Observatory Doomed: Fiery Re-Entry Expected

Date:

NASA’s efforts to save the Swift Observatory have been terminated, leading to the telescope’s impending fiery re-entry later this year. Katalyst Space Technologies and NASA revealed the decision after encountering issues with the Link spacecraft, which was intended to rescue Swift by boosting it to a higher orbit. However, due to spacecraft control problems, Link will not be able to carry out the mission, resulting in Swift’s descent through the atmosphere after two decades of studying cosmic phenomena like gamma ray bursts and exploding stars. The anticipated demise is not expected before October.

NASA had allocated $30 million to Katalyst to raise Swift to a safer orbit, but unforeseen solar activity caused the telescope to lose altitude rapidly. The rescue spacecraft experienced an uncontrollable spin shortly after its launch in July, despite efforts to stabilize it. Although the outcome was not as desired, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman emphasized the importance of the mission’s objectives.

In a silver lining, Katalyst will continue to operate Link in close proximity to Swift to showcase its capabilities for potential future rescue missions. CEO Ghonhee Lee described the mission as ambitious and time-critical, having been organized in under a year. Despite the setbacks, valuable lessons have been learned along the way.

Swift, launched in 2004, had its scientific instruments deactivated earlier this year to prolong its descent. It was orbiting at 345 kilometers above the Earth as of the recent announcement. Katalyst’s initial goal was to return the telescope to its original 600-kilometer orbit for extended astronomical observations.

With the Swift rescue mission abandoned, uncertainties loom over the fate of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, which also faces orbital decay due to heightened solar activity. Hubble, aged 36, could have been the next target for a rescue mission if the Swift endeavor had succeeded. The current status of Hubble’s orbit remains unknown.
