“Surerus Murphy Joint Venture Wins Prince Rupert Gas Transmission Contract”

Date:

A company based in British Columbia has secured a significant contract for the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission project through a joint venture. The Surerus Murphy Joint Venture, comprising the Nisga’a Nation and Western LNG, will construct the initial segment of the new pipeline running from northeastern B.C. to Ksi Lisims LNG on the north coast. Surerus Murphy, known for its work on projects like Coastal GasLink and TransMountain expansions, is currently engaged in building the Eagle Mountain pipeline for Woodfibre LNG. The selection of Surerus Murphy for this project is attributed to its expertise and familiarity with major infrastructure development in B.C.

Eva Clayton, the president of Nisga’a Lisims Government, emphasized the commitment to involve Canadian businesses and local firms in the project. The contractors will be mandated to formulate an Indigenous participation plan for hiring and subcontracting, ensuring that benefits remain within British Columbia.

The construction company mentioned that they are well-acquainted with the challenging terrain of the region. Swiss-based Allseas will handle the subsea pipeline installation at the project’s endpoint. Surerus Murphy is tasked with constructing approximately 193 kilometers of pipeline between Chetwynd and Mackenzie, with operations close to Highway 97 before veering towards the coast. The company highlighted their experience in managing construction impacts in rugged terrains, expressing confidence in their ability to handle the project effectively.

Western LNG spokesperson Rebecca Scott indicated that a final investment decision on the Ksi Lisims project is expected by the year’s end. With half of the annual output of the proposed $30-billion export facility already secured by buyers, additional deals and construction announcements are anticipated. The community is eager for the project to proceed, and the involvement of a seasoned local company demonstrates the commitment to maximizing opportunities and benefits in the region.

A positive final investment decision would lead to the commencement of construction on the facility and pipeline in early 2027.
